    no realistic - remote is the way people want it now unless lost time is compensated in higher salary and office perks (like good lunches and good coffee). If you want talent, you have to consider remote first.

    30+ bay area native. "You can make the case (in AI) that SF is certainly overrated." What are we talking about. The next generation companies (Anthropic, OpenAI, Perplexity) are all in SF for a reason: talent and access to capital. You can try to copy SV all you want, but the talent, culture, and the best companies will remain here. SF / Bay Area has always been boom and bust, that's the plight of innovation and tech. The passion, talent, and access to capital is not leaving such a magical place (the landscape, the schools, the economy, the freedom, and culture). To a native that has lived decades in both SF and the South Bay, the 35 miles that separates us is not different; we're one: The Bay Area. I have always found the culture to be the same when it comes to innovation: a passion for tech and the interest in building long lasting and great companies in unique ways. Many more great companies have come out of SF than Miami (I 'm unable, even after a minute of researching, am unable to tell you a $500m ARR tech company that was founded in Miami). Yuga Labs, the owners of ape .jpegs might be the best argument (based on valuation, not revenue). So, IDK, why the hate for SF / Bay Area? Miami's influx of "innovation" seemed to be seeking one thing major thing: a tax haven. It seems more and more apparent that Miami is or will be a web3 graveyard (I'm purposefully decoupling web3 and crypto and Bitcoin). I also find it hilarious to see the folks that left for Miami (and other locations like ATX) now spending more time back in the Bay.

    Great interview Rex! Informative and to the point. I like that you both shared how you believe things will keep evolving in the Fintech industry, I personally find that insightful. I wish you had asked about Plaid and Fintech serving underserved industries through traditional payment methods such as Cannabis and gambling,...if you think that was not the right space to ask about it... I think it would be interesting to see a panel on how FinTech can solve that problem.

      Ask him about how Early Warning has pretty much monopolized real time bank to bank payments in the US by colluding with the banks to only offer Zelle to their users. It's unfair that the FTC went after them but not after Early Warning.

    • @CambrianHQ
      @CambrianHQ 3 місяці тому

      Good question, but most of the regulators are bank regulators and they don't exist to increase competition w/ banks so much as to keep the banking system safe. The one regulator w/ the correct purview would be CFPB. Why not the FTC? Well the FTC can block mergers on anti-trust grounds, but this was a new product launched by an existing company, not a merger. also you have to define the market and Zelle is not the only P2P real time payment providers. Venmo and Cashapp also have significant volumes!

    • @amanciocohen5965
      @amanciocohen5965 3 місяці тому

      Sorry but you’re wrong. “Why not the FTC? Well the FTC can block mergers on anti-trust grounds, but this was a new product launched by an existing company, not a merger. “ Nope, there have been numerous cases of the FTC going after products launched by existing companies believed to hurt competition. “also you have to define the market and Zelle is not the only P2P real time payment providers. Venmo and Cashapp also have significant volumes!” First of all, Venmo and Cashapp are not real time, they act as intermediaries using Visa direct. There’s only one P2P real time payments solution in the US and that’s Zelle. And even if you were right, then why haven’t Venmo and Cashapp been allowed to compete with Early Warning for the digital real estate in banks’ UX? This is like if iPhones only allowed you to use Google (I don’t mean by default like it is now, I mean straight out not allowing any other search engines even if the user tries to change it). @@CambrianHQ

    So true! Lending companies with AI capabilities, such as Upstart ($UPST), get a valuation premium. Upstart is up 59% in the last year. And it's only focused on car loan lending in this high-interest environment. Also, look at all the appetite for private lending. Every bank and investment company is now getting into private lending. So, done right, lending is a massive business.

    Mercury Bank has declined a lot; customer service has become a nightmare. Friends have told me that opening an account has become very cumbersome. I had a fraud issue with Mercury Bank through a payment gateway, and Mercury Bank held my money blocked for 7 months, and it was a significant amount until my lawyer sent them a statement, and they immediately unblocked my money without giving me any excuses. Additionally, Mercury Bank is very expensive to maintain.

    This was interesting. How do you build discernment for these opportunities you mention at the beginning while talking about your journey? You mention how the company failed but you still view it in good light but I thought that in that SF environment that pressures you to look for more and better, distinguishing between good opportunities that can fail vs bad opportunities that are doomed from the get go can be tough
